If LePage runs he will likely lose to King.

He would have a better shot at beating Collins in a primary.  Not a much better shot, though.

Well, what else does he have to do?

I'm pretty confident he loses though. If he wins it's could be the death of the Democratic party.

LePage would get crushed by King, unless the Democrats decide to be idiots and run someone against him, making for a three-way race.

Ranked choice voting will prevent a spoiler in a three-way race.

Even if that happens the race will go to automatic runoff which certifies King winner.

I think he has less of a realistic shot of winning in 2018 now that ranked choice is a thing, but he has said he will run as long as Trump doesn't offer him a job in DC.

And he will lose.

If he loses in 2018, will he challenge Collins in 2020?

Possibly, though I wonder if Collins would still be in the Senate by then (assuming no Governor run in 2018 or choosing not to run for re-election)

Unlikely that's implemented by 2018.

Why not? It passed on the ballot at the November election. I'm pretty sure any attempt to delay would be rebuked by courts.

There's a lot of infrastructure that will have to be laid out to implement the specifics of the measure, plus the Maine SoS has already said it likely won't be ready by 2018.

If IRV isn't in effect, let's hope the Democrats get fully behind Angus King and discourage any Democrats from running.

What would be the best IRV system for jungle primaries? Top two with approval primary, top two with range primary, or top four with ranked choice general?

The people shouting that "Lepage will lose!" Are the same people who said "Lepage won't win reelection!" And "trump won't win the presidency!"

LePage would be a more serious candidate for an open seat than some on this forum recognize, but I don't think there's anyone in Maine -- except maybe Collins/Snowe -- who's capable of beating Angus King.

Incidentally, Collins is considering a run for Governor.

If ranked choice voting is not in effect in 2018, Democrats could decide not to run anyone or King could run as a Democrat.
