Clinton banned assault weapons, appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg and was anti-tobacco. He wasn't even a populist Democrat, he signed NAFTA. I understand Clinton winning them in 1992, but why was Dole so bad a candidate he couldn't win these states?

He sure came close--within 1-2 points in each state. The transformation of this region hadn't quite reached fruition yet, but whereas the good ole boy Clinton still had some regional appeal, the wooden Al Gore sealed the deal for the GOP.

It goes to show that voters in states like these care a lot more about cultural affinity than positions on the issues.

The fact that they came so close to going for Dole (they likely would have without Perot in the race) shows how Republican they were starting to become.

He lost TN because Gore was on the ticket and visited the state multiple times.

I think KY would have gone to Dole without Perot and TN would have been the closest state in the country. But yeah, these states have changed a lot since then.

Kentucky was an Atlas Red state at the time.
