Sadly this isn't hypothetical.

Option 3.

I'm pro-choice, but I do find the idea of aborting children for having such disabilities disturbing.  I currently know some people with Down Syndrome.

They can only redeem themselves by electing Flawless Beautiful Manuel Purple heart Purple heart Purple heart.

Option 3, btw, though I want to stress that I don't want to be too harsh on women who aborted their children with Down: that must be an awful decision.

It's great for those who have the courage to raise a child with Down's Syndrome but not everyone has it. And there are those who do far worse things to Down's syndrome than have them aborted. Some that are kept are castrated or have their anatomy surgically simplified so that they will never hit adolescence. This is so that they will be easy to care for and carry around as they age.

Difference of opinion on whether that's worse than being aborted but yeah, people with Down Syndrome's trials and tribulations are far from over once they're born.

Disability issues are actually one of my biggest hobbyhorses but they don't come up on the forum enough for me to talk about them here a lot.

I don't have a problem with people deciding to get an abortion for this reason if they feel that is the best decision for them at the time, as terrible as it is. That said, this ruling in France is repulsive--people with Down's syndrome are people too.

While I'm utterly disgusted by the ruling, the fact that they had to censor it shows there's at least some awareness of the moral abhorrence of abortion and shunting the disabled off to the side.

Agreed. While I'm pro-choice, I do believe however that it's inconsistent to believe in the fetus' right to live, but not in the case of Down Syndrome.
