Trump's best performances compared to recent Republican candidates were in areas that were won by Obama twice, and in many cases had not voted Republican in decades.  One example being Macomb County, Michigan, a 2x Obama county where the term "Reagan Democrat" originated.  Before this election, the conventional wisdom on here and elsewhere was that most of the original Reagan Democrats from the 80s were dead or dying off, and the Democrats didn't need the votes of middle-aged and older blue collar whites without a college degree to win anymore.  But in the end it was the working class Midwestern whites, whose votes Obama had either won outright or won enough to win in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Iowa, that allowed Trump to win the Electoral College.

I think that there are a new group of these voters who voted for Obama, but who resent deeply what you mention here.

I think that Trump stopped the Democratic trend in suburbia.  This is what ought to alarm Democrats most of all.

Reagan Democrats were people who - obviously by the name - had been considered regular, loyal Democrats for their entire adult lives before voting for Reagan. The last time Reagan was on the ballot was 32 years ago. Reagan Democrats weren't people in their 20s or even 30s at that time: they were chunks of the New Deal Coalition and those who followed (born 1915-1935). People 45 and up - arguably the bulk of them were older - were the Reagan Democrats. Someone who was 45 in 1980 would be 81 today. The vast majority are dead.

Additionally, there is no reason to refer to any group of people, regardless of era, as "Reagan Democrats" simply because they were longtime Democratic voters who suddenly voted for a Republican President. Nobody called Obama's Republican supporters "FDR Republicans" in 2008. As disgusting as it sounds, call them "Trump Democrats".

Well, uh, it kinda was.  That and nominating a candidate who came off as totally aloof and ethically compromised.

My great-grandparents were Reagan Democrats born in 1918 and 1921 but they are both dead now with my great grandmother dying this past spring, most are dead now but I have a few great great aunts and uncles who are Reagan Democrats and in their late 90's.
