Still keeping this up for debate. Any thoughts folks?

This looks pretty good to me fyi. It provides a worker's "bill of rights" in a sense, with upholding their civil and economic rights.

I'm a little concerned about section 1-1b

So including education would mean adding up the hours they spend in school?  I think most high schools are about 6-7 hours a day for 5 days a week.  That would leave about 5-10 hours per week to work.  A lot of students need to work to help support their family or just to get experience.  They need to be able to work more hours than that.

Would such a person be allowed to opt out of the limit, as it says employees are allowed to do in 1-1a? I'm not entirely clear on how that works.

Also, not to sound like a socialist, but why is the work week length 45 hours and not 40 hours? Tongue

As Siren pointed out, the section regarding 16-17 year olds is rather restrictive. At my HS, the total hours some students (including myself) were in school per week was roughly comparable to a standard 40-hour workweek -- you should really consider loosening it up.

I think the best thing to do would be to strike the "including education" part and then lower the hours a bit to keep the spirit of the clause.  30 hours?  more/less?

In NY they divide it into categories for 14/15 year olds and 16/17 year olds and theres different hours that students can work on school days, on non-school days, and when school isn't in session like during the summer break.  They have it at 28 hours for 16/17 year olds and 18 hours for 14/15 year olds.  Not saying that's the best way, but it's an example.  I think we should consider lowering the minimum age to 15 or maybe 14 too.

Here's the website where I got the info for NY.  It has a handy chart at the bottom.  https://labor.ny.gov/youth/14-to-17.shtm

Yeah, I would support making the minimum age 14 and a 30 hour maximum workweek excluding education for those under 18.

Yeah I think so... I'll include that in my amendment.

Just noticed that Section 1, Clause 1 says 45 hours, instead of 40. We made the amendment in the Senate; the other amendment was picked up though. Smiley
