During the primaries, the CNN exit polling had a majority of Sanders primary voters saying they'd vote for Trump over Clinton in a GE.

It's strange considering that Sanders was further left on environmental issues than Clinton.

I suspect most of these Sanders votes were anti-Clinton/Obama votes.

Clinton actually won WV int he 2008 democratic primary. Of course, that was when she ran as a "proud moderate" and criticized Obama's "clingers" comment about rural America. This time, she tried to prove her progressive bona-fides by promising to "put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business" which led to many people voting for Bernie simply as a protest vote against her. Other candidates besides her and Bernie actually combined to beat Hillary in a few counties. That's how badly she did.

Interestingly, a democrat won the gubernatorial race. The state democrat party has detached itself from the national one better than any other.

While this is true, Sanders had a message and platform beyond environmental issues that resonated with Coal country.
