It appears the PS reached levels of hopelessness similar to those of SFIO in the late 60s.

Does French socialists need a reset, like it happened in early 1970s, when SFIO was replaced by PS?

Maybe.

But remember that it happens all the time that an incumbent party gets very unpopular, is sent into opposition and seems to be doomed. And then in most cases after some time it recovers.

So far for the general case. In the special case of the French socialists, yes they are incredibly unpopular. But most voters are still out there in the center-left orbit.
There are at least three scenarios:
- They might come back when/if the socialist brand has become less toxic. Still quite likely judging from a lot of precedent cases in Western Europe.
- They might have to form a broader alliance with a new name and in which the socialists are less dominating. Possible.
- Another politically similar force might take its place.
- The political spectrum changes significantly and the ex-socialist potential gets eaten up by different rivals. Less likely than one might think in my opinion. France is not the Poland from ten years ago. Although the political landscape is moving all over Europe.
