Castro was in some ways a tragic figure. We must remember the cold war reality did play a role in his regime becoming more and more authoritarian (and the U.S. stance pretty much pushed them further into Soviet arms, which was avoidable). I do appreciate his influence in rising of the "pink tide" and impressive work in fields of health care. Unfortunately, bad things can't be denied. He was a dictator.

Cuba is one unlucky country: from one bad regime to another. And historically it's largely the U.S.' fault. I hope we're past this now with both countries seeing their past mistakes.

That is true. Cuba always ends up with bad regimes. Cuba's healthcare is also terrible. While Cuba's healthcare is free, it is inadequate.

Yes, though it's an improvement from the previous era. Still years of communism and subsquent economic isolation took a tool.

I hope Trump doesn't reverse the progress Obama made with Cuba. Lifting the embargo would also help agriculture in the US and Cuba's economy, especially now that some reforms in Cuba have been made, like allowing some private industry.

And thus dies one of my four potential secret identities.

I must thank various posters in this thread for enlightening me - when I first saw the headline I thought he was an old film director or something!

Seriously though... this reminded me that one of the reasons I don't like the Left Party in Germany is that they've got a sub-organization called "Cuba Si", which is basically a club of Castro lovers. They've also already posted an article headlined "Thanky you Fidel, for your liefe's work" on your website. Sad

Despite the lack of political liberties, Cuba has the highest litteracy rate in Latin America, the highest life expectancy, and the second lowest murder rate. Cuba has the second lowest infant mortality of the American continent. The first is Canada.

Not a nice guy in the grand scheme of things, but his crimes were nowhere near as bad as some of the regimes the US has supported for geopolitical reasons. he wasn't an indiscriminate murderer in the way the Contras or Pinochet were, nor did he boil his opponents alive as the likes of Islam Karimov did.

And there are worse crimes than taking aristocrat's land away in my opinion.

As others have pointed out, Cuba also has much higher living standards than most of the rest of the Caribbean.

RIP, he's so controversial, his legacy will be full of praise and curse.
By the way, Lyin' Ted is essentially celebrating his death.

Don't have a strict view on him, a man of his era did some good did some terrible things. It will be interesting to see what happens in Cuba when Raul dies as well
