If the US went full protectionist, and adopted mercantilism again...

What would the results, for the country and the world?

Would the US be able function while withdrawing from the global economy, with a few exceptions?

It would be able to function, of course - US is big enough. It would go through a somewhat nasty recession and eventually stabilise at a growth path below the current one. It would also, likely, lose its leading position in the international financial system, implying a further need for substantial retrenchment (to begin with, the debt that today is quite manageable would become much more of a problem).

But, to make the long story short, while everybody is going to be poorer, most Americans will survive.  Assuming, of course, a trade war does not get converted into a hot war. Which it might.

I could see that if it becomes the only recourse where there were others before in determining which businesses get to buy and sell what and to where.

Would you mind translating this into English?

If people can't trade for what they need, they take it.

Well, yeah, contraband would be pervasive. Organized crime would get a boost it has not had since the 1930s.

Or the various cartels that wanted the trade restrictions will push their patron Government to War.

America becomes a Jeffersonian utopia of yeoman farmers collaborating with worker-led manufacturing conglomerates to provide for the needs of each and every citizen.

The rest of the world descends into constant and global war.
