The planet in 2016 has been very warm, but you have to realize there was a major underlying factor for this that cannot be connected to manmade greenhouse gas emissions:

We had a super El Niño that released a huge stockpile of heat from the Pacific ocean into the atmosphere.  That heat has traveled upwards and polewards and is now being radiated into space.  In the meantime, the tropical Pacific has cooled down significantly.

Also keep in mind that the main satellite that tracks global sea ice failed this year so the available sea ice information was basically hobbled and they are modeling quite a bit of it.  I'm not saying that is responsible for "something being very wrong" but you should keep it in mind.

Bill McKibben is hardly an objective source even for the consensus view on climate change and you should never trust a graph he posts.. because he will ensure it is picked and groomed for maximum effect.

The Arctic is still very very warm, but let's take a look at the most recent Arctic temps (again, these are MODELED temperatures.. not actual ones.  We have almost no thermometers above 80N which is what the graph represents)


You and I both know exactly why he chose to clip the graph at the time he did.  To give an appearance that temps were going up up up and away!

He also didn't mention this:

Global snowcover is well above average.  Northern Eurasia has been extremely cold and the snowpack has extended well south and west into Iran and Afghanistan as well as western Russia, central Asia, and eastern Europe.

Here are the northern hemispheric temperatures for the last week.  It is still significantly warmer than normal overall (not surprising in this day and age)... but it's not all warmth.  Russia and central Asia have been experiencing cold that is quite unusual and will spell trouble as global temperatures continue to drop through the winter (compared to average) and all that cold spills over the ice cap and into North America.



These drive by postings don't do anything except provide a deliberately partial picture that you are supposed to accept without thinking or double checking.

Thank you Snowguy for that thorough explanation! Climate deniers take advantage of any flaw in the narrative about climate change, while real science isn't often so clean and neat.
