I get what you're trying to do, but for these purposes FDR isn't the mirror to Reagan. The other poll wasn't about the right's admiration for Reagan, but the left's hatred of him, so the analogous Democrat wouldn't be someone the left admires, but someone the right hates--like Obama.

Of course, whatever the matchup is, violent dictators are still obviously bad. Tongue

Easily FDR. Saddam murdered thousands of Iraqis. Saddam and his cousin "Chemical Ali" were responsible for the al-Anfal Campaign and 1988 Halabja poison gas attack. Saddam Hussein also had secret "acid baths" and "rape rooms". He also personally shot dead a Minister of Health. He also put people into a wood chipper feet first. FDR got Social Security passed, which is an important government program that helps people during retirement and is a crucial part of the nation's important social safety net. FDR also abolished the gold standard because it couldn't keep up with the economy. Today, the gold standard would be impractical.

A better comparison for the right would be Allende or Pinochet.

That is a better one. I prefer Allende. Although Allende was a major homophobe, Pinochet was a brutal authoritarian.

I mean he probably was a homophobe, but I doubt he was any more of a homophobe than Pinochet.

A better comparison for conservatives would be Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein. I would still easily pick Castro.

FDR was one of, if not our greatest President. But I guess I'm not a "rightie" per se.
Although you are right of center.

To show that the right wing here unlike the left wing won't choose a dictator (no matter if they are right or left) over an American president.

Because american presidents have all been capitalistic, so the right has no reason to dislike anyone of them. Let's not act like Saddam perused any right-wing policies, in the scheme of things, so let's not act like the right would like him. However the right, including Regan were fine with supporting fascist dictatorships around the world, including the Taliban for the pursuit of the free-market right-wing agenda.

I still say FDR/Reagan isn't a very good analogy, since FDR isn't hated by the right like Reagan is by the left. Also Saddam/Fidel isn't the best of analogies either--can anyone seriously picture a prominent western politician praising Saddam Hussein like Trudeau praised Castro?

A better comparison would be something like Obama vs. Pinochet.
