The white half of the state moves out entirely before the 2020 election.

Not sure if it will be close but they will win Mississippi if its John Bel Edwards and Sherrod Brown vs. Mia Love and Carl DeMaio

Trump appoints Cochran or Wicker to something, and a special election ensues. The Republican nominee is caught doing what David Vitter did (but worse) and Jim Hood is the Democratic candidate. Hood wins the special election, is re-elected in 2018 (if it was Wicker) and runs for the Democratic nomination, beating Bill De Blasio and Andrew Cuomo in a hard-fought primary. Due to a failing economy (disproportionately affecting the Deep South) and an incredibly incompetent President Trump, Hood beats Trump comfortably, with Obama 2012 level margins in the electoral college, barely eking out a win in Mississippi.

That isn't happening though.

Just like that White South Carolina Democrat beat Black Tim Scott, right?

I think "Carl DeMaio" is the key operative here.

Trust me I lived in SC its no Mississippi. Plus a lot people in Charleston think that 2010 primary was orchestrated by the RNC anyway.

I'm pretty sure Tim Scott's Senate opponents were both black.

My bad, you are right!  I was thinking of that Sheheen guy or whatever, but he was running for governor ("Let's send Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from!" as the SC Democratic attendees burst into applause, honoring their local party's history quite well Tongue).

Still, despite some conspiracy theories, a SC GOP primary electorate nominated him, yes?

You'd have to turn the calendar back to 1976, when blacks and work0ng-class Southern whites voted alike. That's ancient history now.

Democrats need to make sure that they can win Michigan in 2020!

It'll be extremely difficult to do. Remember, Whites in Mississippi aren't like Whites in Michigan, voting even more Republican. The vast majority of them are not college educated and are just...well...you all know.

This person would have to be a White male from here who can appeal to some White Mississippians by having a moderate ideology and embrace the way of living of the state and other things. After all, a candidate only need like 25% of the White vote (but even that's a tall order).

Anyways, demographics in the future would shift this state slowly, but surely.

Yes, but he was originally appointed and faced only token primary opposition.

That said I agree with your overall point that South Carolinians, while often racist, are not so horribly racist that they'd abandon their party loyalty and ideology to avoid voting for a black person.

The democrats run a southern blue-dog candidate and the republican candidate is outed as a homosexual atheist one week before election day.

Both are equally unlikely. Together, they're just about impossible. Plus, that'd probably be landslide material anyway.

to be at all reälistic, you'd need not just a democratic candidate with appeal to mississippi, but also a republican candidate who would suppress southern white turnout (presumably a bloomberg-type hyperrich cosmopolitan type)

not a whole lot of plausible candidates that fit that mold, though, especially since on paper trump should be a terrible fit for mississipi. jbe vs carly fiorina is about the best i can come up with
