Both candidates seemed to generally agree on this premise. This would be a crucial election to determine the future of the United States. Elect [candidate name] and the future will be bright and full of hope, elect [opposing candidate] and there is no future.

Well, what do you say Atlas? Will history look back on the 2016 election as a crucial turning point in the story of humanity, or will it be more of a footnote?

It will be the event that historians point to as the start of neo-nationalism (possibly Brexit will be first).

It will signal the end of the globalists. When the American people took back our country from the elites and special interests.

It will be looked upon fondly by historians.

YES!

Possible establishment of an authoritarian, repressive, reactionary America in which 95% of the people are obliged to suffer for 2% -- but smile anyway. This could be the last free election involving federal offices in America for a very long time.

Probably but maybe not. This election could well be a poisoned chalice, given the unpopularity of both candidates and the immense challenges they face, plus a recession is likely to occur. Then 2020 would be more consequential if the Democrats win and gain a majority and are able to implement their agenda. Still, it probably was extremely consequential.

It really depends on the French and German elections.

But i think we are looking at the turning point of economic migration.

We have just witnessed one of the largest migration of human beings on the planet.

What we are seeing is an internal disquiet amongst people on issues they have been unable to discuss.

Trump will probably end up being the poster child of that movement.

It's the most significant election...since the last one and until the next one. Every election is The Most Important Ever until it isn't.

Come back in a few decades and I'll tell you.

EDIT: But I think we can make the assumption that the "defining", significant election of the early 21st century will be either this one or 2008. Hard to see a third paradigm emerge.

I consider this election as the dirtiest, the most violent and the most negative since many years. I regret the 2008 Presidential election. McCain was a better candidate.
I can't wait 2020, 2024 or far later...

It will signal the end of the globalists. When the American people took back our country from the elites and special interests. turned their backs on reality and compassion, and gave into fear and hatred of those who are different from them.

It will be looked upon fondly as a tragedy by historians.

Indeed it is.

This could very well be the beginning of a new Republican alignment and resurgence.

It will depend on how the first Trump term goes.

If he delivers on jobs, this will be very positive for the Republican future.

There are two others I would make a case for in addition to 2016 and 2008:

2000- The closeness and the controversy really marked the beginning of this hyper-partisan era where we can't even agree on the facts

2004- It brought social issues to the front and really woke up the social conservative wing of the GOP.  It also showed that Democrats can win when they focus on the economy, but struggle when they play identity politics.

This could very well be the beginning of a new Republican alignment and resurgence.

No true, lasting realignment begins with the party in question losing the youth vote (aka future America) by landslide proportions, while also losing ground among most growing portions of the electorate.

Millennials hate Trump, and he is now officially the face of the Republican Party. Millennials, younger GenX'ers, all heavily Democratic groups (and likely democratic in the case of future GenZ), will make up over half of the actual electorate by 2024 or earlier. That's quite a dilemma for Republicans if you ask me.

Trump is just a temporary anaesthetic. You guys still have a massive new voter problem, and it would be unwise to think Trump's win has made concern for that unnecessary.

I did state that it depends on how the first Trump term goes.

But I do believe the Republicans, as a result of 2016, have the possibility to expand their support into the upper Midwest, appealing to working class people who care about jobs more than they do about ideology.

I'm hoping it's the first step to going to individualism and real freedom.

Actually Putin did that long before Brexit. Even Duterte came before Brexit by a month.

Obviously you don't.

Your fellow anti Trumpites have been throwing around terms like fascist and racist for the last month to anyone who didn't support Clinton.

And you're talking about nice?

Get a grip on reality man.
