Can Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a tough negotiator, run and win the Illinois governorship in 2018 against Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner if he ran?

If Democrats want to hand Bruce Rauner a second term on a silver platter, Rahm's their guy.

Well, he'd certainly keep the Illinois gubernatorial tradition up well!

Rahm would not be able to be re-elected in Chicago.

Please not. He would lose so badly. The People’s Pat would even do much better.

Emanuel is underrated and immensely qualified for the job.

He'd be a terrible choice, and would reinforce the Chicago v. Chicago Suburbs v. Rest of Illinois dynamic.

This. People need to remember that Bernie almost got IL to vote for him in the primary on a "Hillary is too close to Rahm" campaign message.

(And I would endorse Rauner for re-election in this case too.)

There is a reason megacity mayors almost never win gubernatorial or Senate races. The skills needed to win one are often not the same as the skills needed to win the other.
