Nice! Sets him up nicely for a future run at Senator or Governor. Also sets himself to be the "legal" face of the opposition against future Trump/Republican actions.

I think it is showing that younger "rising stars" for the house democrats such as Becerra and Van Hollen have decided that moving into a state executive position and becoming a backbencher in the senate are more appealing than continuing to pursue house leadership

One could look at it two ways 1) that they think the house is too hard so get ready for the senate or 2) the senate is harder and it's better to refill the bench for 2020

Strange that he doesn't want to wait for Pelosi to retire and then angle for minority leader/speaker.

This opens up a lot of future opportunities.

This also signals that Pelosi is ready to remain the democratic leader until she's well into her eighties

Since this is supposed to be a thread about CA-34, who runs in the special election? If I'm reading the map right, Assemblyman Miguel Santiago's district overlaps with this one--I don't know anything about him but he's in his forties so maybe a name to watch?

No the democratic caucus is very loyal meaning that Ryan could go the way of Heath Shuler

Don't agree with that, but I think Ryan won't be leader.  He's running for Governor.  The I stood up to Pelosi line might to him good in 2018.

One thing I noticed was that it was Crowley, and not Becerra, who was viewed as the strongest possible challenger to Pelosi. I wonder if Becerra simply didn't have the power base in the House to succeed Pelosi, whenever she chose to retire.

Also, if I was a left-leaning officeholder, I'd probably have a lot more fun in California than Washington.

He was challenged in 2014 and 2016 by Adrienne Nicole Edwards. Does anyone know anything about her?

Seems to be a nobody. Presumably a State Senator or Representative will rise to the occasion.

All I could find was her campaign website.

Does James Hahn live in this district?

https://twitter.com/JohnAPerez/status/804427718947287041 John Perez, former speaker of the California state assembly, announced via twitter that he's running for Becerra's seat.

Perez is very skilled. He's also an out gay man. I could see him quickly rising the ranks of House dems.

Senate Pro Tem Kevin de Leon is also rumored to be interested.

This area is the center of Latino power in California so it would be a good base for a future Democratic leader. It's where many of California's legislative leaders--Villaraigosa, Nunez, Perez, de Leon--hail from.

I like Becerra but he doesn't strike me as the cutthroat political operator one really needs to be to rise as House leader. I think he's a better senator or executive type.

This also signals that Pelosi is ready to remain the democratic leader until she's well into her eighties

And then when she passes away, daily séances will allow her to rule over House Democrats from beyond the grave.

Yes but I don't think he's going anywhere after the scandal where his son killed someone... and didn't get punished all that much.

City Councilman David Ryu might be a potential candidate and in a special the Asian-American vote might be disproportionately higher because of better turnout vis-a-vis latinos. But I expect that it will more likely be a battle royale between two key power broker factions or a coronation for Perez.
