I mean, Christmas is pretty much a secular holiday at this point if we're being honest with ourselves

Nobody I know ever thought of Santa as being in any way a religious thing. Santa is a big fat man who brings gifts. I love Santa and have a statue of him sitting on my desk as I write this. I'm glad I'm not a kid today having to deal with these uber sensitive issues, (not to mention guns and drugs in the schools).

Santa is a "unifier" if there ever was one. Don't exclude him in the schools or anywhere people want to have a representation of him. Santa represents LOVE, giving and sharing, and everyone around the world needs those things in their life.

I guarantee you would be one pissed off fourth grader if they canceled Secret Santa at your elementary school.

Flashback to one of my very earliest memories -- when I was 4 in preschool (so, 2001) and confidently informed the class that Santa wasn't real and it's actually their parents bringing them gifts.

I took it more as "who cares," no one is offended by Santa.

It really is, it's a national holiday celebrated by many non-Christians and Christians alike. Let Santa stay!

How sad! I always enjoyed Santa as a kid. I wonder why there's pressure to get rid of him and not, say, decorations of witches or goblins at Halloween time. There may very well be, but I've not heard of it.

Perhaps though the school district is afraid the displays could be upsetting to some of the students and alienate them. The police in San Bernardino seem to think it may have been one of the reasons behind the attacks there:

He's based on a Catholic saint. Maybe it offends Protestants?

(As a Protestant myself, I'm not offended. Not many people consider Methodists True Protestants*TM though.)

Technically, it's St. Nicholas who is religious, not Santa himself.

Side note, the real-life Saint Nicholas literally punched the founder of one of the earliest Christian heresies in the face.

Religious tolerance does not mean being equally intolerant of all religions.

This is just one school district, not some state or federal law. If Santa Claus is a religious figure, then no, he doesn't belong in public schools. It'd be akin to displaying images of crucifixes. But whether or not Santa Claus is a proper religious figure is another debate altogether.

Santa Claus is not in the Bible, and the "fat jolly bearded guy in a red suite" thing was invented by Coca-Cola.
