The wisdom of individual policies changes with the times. This is why it's so silly to claim that the Democrats of the 1830s were "conservatives" because they supported states' rights and opposed the National Bank; in that day and age, shifting power away from the central government was the best strategy for bringing about liberal social and economic reforms. Likewise, it makes perfect sense for a pro-business conservative to support high tariffs in the 1920s, because such was in the best interest of businesses at that time.

THANK YOU, haha.  Literally this.  I've articulated several times why I'd be a protectionist back then but find the practice stupid as hell today.
