How about not creating a giant rift with a vital trading partner and powerful force on the global stage. This kind of thing is incredibly risky and should not be done without massive consideration of the consequences.

If America collectively cared about consequences, we would not have elected President Pussygrabber.

Very brave for Trump to stand up and do the right thing unlike all the cowards before him (even if it is out of complete ignorance)

Yeah. Unwittingly, he's just made one of the greatest US foreign policy achievements of the past 50 years.

Taiwan is a top issue for me (up there with life and Israel), and this just makes me so happy.

You don't have any qualms with the president of the united states unwittingly implementing foreign policy? That doesn't bother at you at all? How long do you think that kind of bumbling leadership is going to pay dividends for America?

Lincoln questions the practice of slavery.

How about now questioning a vital trading partner and powerful group within our nation that will set off a war? Battling with a trading partner presents an incredible risk for our economy and national survival.

Let's not raise the price of textiles by making cotton expensive to produce. Economics, duh. Smiley Smiley Smiley

No president has questioned the practice of slavery for over 20 years! Now a 2-year inexperienced congressman from Hicksville struts on in without a clue!

I don't inherently have a problem with reform of this relationship itself, but the manner in which such reform be carried out must be handled extremely delicately. Words have tremendous power and great consequences in these types of situations.

And here's the tweet:

Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump  5m5 minutes ago
The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!

Edit: I've rephrased the thread title for clarity.

Horrible analogy is horrible. Slavery had been a controversial opinion for nearly 100 years by 1860, with plenty of prominent politicians, including several presidents, against it. It was a major issue that led to the formation of the Republican Party, and voters knew exactly what they were doing when they elected Lincoln.

This is coming straight out of left field and in all likelihood Trump didn't even know what he was doing. There has been no prominent political movement advocating this. It certainly wasn't a centerpiece of Trump's campaign or a reason anyone voted for him.

More to the point, he shouldn't even have the words "President of Taiwan" anywhere near a tweet. Please twitter, for the sake of the country and world peace, ban him from twitter.

Trump's open hostility towards China was one of my primary reasons for supporting him, so I was kind of hoping this would happen. I know I will not be happy with everything he does as President, but I pray for him and hope that he surrounds himself with good people who can help him deliver "victories" for America to restore our self-esteem just like Ronald Reagan did in the 1980s.

I think you are missing my point Sprouts. It's not like you can't get something good from mistakes, but that doesn't mean it's good to make them. Are you saying it's no biggie to make mistakes because sometimes it'll change history?

Personally, I support Taiwan regarding this issue, but I have to wonder if it bothers any Trump supporters out there that their president-elect is clueless on so much policy, both foreign and domestic. It leads to blunders, which can accidentally result in good things and also really bad things. Even surrounding yourself with the "best people" (he's not, he's surrounding himself with loyalists) doesn't make up for a severe lack of knowledge on basically all of govt/policy/diplomacy/etc. They can't carry all the weight.

So you believe Trump knew exactly what he was doing and what response(s) it could potentially evoke?
