The only way US-China start WWIII over Taiwan is if Taiwan formally declares independence from the PRC and "forces China's hand" into invading Taiwan as part of PRC military doctrine.

This was not the smartest move from Trump, to say the least, but there was a lot of panicking, huffing, and puffing from the media as usual.
