I saw a hipster Christian play tonight

Yeah I actually saw a play. (Something I mentioned to my mom earlier tonight, "I'm actually seeing a play!" She loves plays and sees a lot of the surprisingly high number that are performed in Bismarck.) Of course, this one is quite different. It's called "Sex in the Dark" for one. I knew all about it because the person in charge of promotion is a Facebook friend of mine I met a sadly now defunct church, so it was cool seeing her again. Also the former pastor of said church, who is now on the board of the company putting on the show and spoke at the end. BTW in my conversation with him before I learned that he is also a huge fan of Vox.

Anyway the play was held in a venue with a large "BLACK LIVES MATTER" sign out front, has two bathrooms but they are both labeled "All gender restroom" and had a lot of tables with merch and info about various causes, like sexual assault survivor groups, LGBT health and sex education, some pamphlets about helping LGBT people quit tobacco and also free condoms.

But anyway, the play was about a night shared together between a trans man (played by a transgender Catholic priest. But not a Roman Catholic one obviously, from some schismatic tiny liberal offshoot called the Old Catholic Church) and a plus sized woman on the night of the Orlando nightclub shooting with them both thinking that they could finally have sex that night. The main issues discussed was about how both were so uncomfortable with their bodies, how the woman was dealing with how even her friends in her super liberal bubble (since it's obviously set in Minneapolis) thought it was so weird she was dating a trans man. So basically a very Anvilicious (but also a clear case of Some Anvils Need To Be Dropped) story about body positivity, such as the woman mentioning going to the doctor or picking up medications and just being told about how she should go on a diet or about the guy talking about how maybe she deserves a man who doesn't carry his penis in a bag or how she doesn't believe it when people tell her she's beautiful (and if there's any doubt, this is the actress.) It very well could easily be written by Lena Dunham and actually it's a shame she'll probably never see it because I bet she would like it and promote it well.

And then of course afterwards there was a "talkback" hosted by said pastor guy. He even started out calling it a "safe space" and had discussions on things like what movies have shaped your views of sexuality, parts that struck you in the play and what is "normal".

But I got to see some old friends (main reason I went) and had a good night.

(Oh yeah and my mom apparently has tickets to some play called "Almost Maine" that's playing in Bismarck now that she wants to go to when her and my dad have time at one of the showings. Maybe some of you have heard of that.)

Also, I don't know if this counts as the movie 'shaping my views on sexuality', but when I think about sex Veronica Lake's voice in I Married a Witch pops into my head, like, half the time. At least.

My favorite part is how they give out pamphlets to help LGBT people stop smoking. I'm pretty sure LGBT people hold cigarettes straight out just like everybody else. Not quite sure why LGBT people in particular need help quitting tobacco.

tbh smoking seems to be much more prevalent among gay guys in my experience (largely because the smoking area is a godsend for meeting people)
