Great news. Now Bush will pick an honest judge to succeed O'Connor.

Still, it's quite odd.  Everyone says the man has only a few years to live at most.  Why not retire now?

If he won't retire now, he will probably die in court a little later.  Either way, it won't take long.

Looks like I was wrong. Oh well. I think Rehnquist is taking a "Screw you" type of attitude towards the press for all the speculation. If he can serve and still do a good job, more power to him.

As I have said before, Rehnquist will die in office. He already has one foot in the grave. Might as well stay.

Or it could be that he wants to take his baby with its new engine (after Ginsburg, O'Connor, and Stevens' replacesments are sitting on the court in the form of Brown, Luttig, Garza) for a spin.

He has to make it to August 2008. to beat William Orville Douglas's record.

He won't make it. Over/under on him surviving another year?

Yeah, I don't know if he has that kind of staying power at this point.

Well, over under would be one year.  I think you want the straight odds here.

Douglas was totally senile in his last years on the court; the other justices refused to even count his vote.  Does Rehnquist want something like this in his legacy?
