It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  If this happens, Kim Reynolds will become governor. Any thoughts?

Well, that would make the Iowa seat vaguely plausible for the dems in 2018.

Offhand I'd wonder if Vilsack is interested in his old job? Probably a fresh face would be better but IA Dems will need to work for this one if they want it back.

It's also how now-retired politicians Gary Locke and Max Baucus closed off their careers. Branstad is 70, so it's not like he'd do anything else after. Maybe he'll follow Locke and Baucus and close off his carrer with that.

Fair enough. Brandstad always seemed to me as someone with no higher elective office ambitions other than Governor.

Exactly.

Sets up a clean succession for Reynolds, who he apparently wants as his successor. From what I inderstand she'd be a tough out

It's so obvious that Branstad has been grooming Reynolds as his successor since day one. She's the most active Iowa LG in years. Most people can't even name the state's LG, who literally does absolutely nothing. But she's ALWAYS coming with him to every major event, and she attracts large crowds herself.

She doesn't have much of a record, and she'll obviously have Branstad's record to run on if she does ascend. But Branstad's popularity has gone down the toilet here since he got reelected. Medicare privatization has been an absolute disaster for the state and now he's targeting union benefits for police officers. He's also been looking at closing the state's very last mental health facility in the state, which is a HUGE problem, given how many people need mental health services and can't get them here.

But Branstad's big support lies in the business community, and if Reynolds can get those types of voters to turn out, she'll be fine.

There's also the fact that others might want to seat. Rumor has it that Ron Corbett, mayor of Cedar Rapids, really wants it, and I don't know that he'd step aside if Reynolds got the nod.

Would Reynolds carry that base of his?

I don't see why she wouldn't. But I don't know, since she's always sort of been in his shadow, and she hasn't really done anything on her own.

Yes, he’s the longest serving governor in US history, just surpassed former NY Governor George Clinton.

Huh You don't serve as Governor and Ambassador to China at the same time. He knows that would be an insult to Iowa (and we don't exactly want another reason to disrespect China right now as well).

It's like the only notable exception. Plus, if you want to be precise, Bush wasn't the Ambassador, but Chief of the Liason Bureau (US still formally recognizing Taiwan.)

The benchmark of humor is whether or not you are smart enough to understand the joke?

OK fine I'm salty I responded seriously to a joke. I've also had a bottle of fruity rose so I'm feeling frisky.
