Yes. The states entered into the union voluntarily, so they should be allowed to leave it. And Obama would have still won if it hadn't existed in both '08 and '12, so it's not like Dems need it.

I'd still prefer slicing the country into two or three separate nations.

I think every State should have the right to secede. But there needs to be a clear desire by the people in that State for secession. It would have to be done by referendum and need something like 2/3 or 3/4 of the votes to be in favor of it to go through. I don't like the idea of a State seceding by a 50.01%-49.99% vote.

They should be encouraged to do so.

No, and it should be fought if it tried to do so.

Ironically the US GDP would plummet if California left. I doubt very much we would let the blue states secede because the red states are - how to gently put this? - uneducated and less productive compared to the bluer states.

Basically axe NY, CA, and IL and the US would go from a super economy to a second rate one.

No, they should not be allowed to secede from the union.

They should be forced to live under a Trump Presidency, like it or not, at least for a minimum of four years.

After living four or eight years under a Trump Presidency, let them go their own way if that's what they want.

No at that point they would probably be under a Democratic Presidency. The Republican states are free to defect at that point though.

I agree, but that is a terrible argument. With the exception of the 13 colonies, Vermont, and Texas, the states are creations of congress. Even then Texas and the rest of the south got forced back into the union anyway.

By the time I agree that a state should be able to secede from the union, most people will agree with me... and genuinely.

Despite my banter and desire to see someone else reel from the long-term effects of a secession attempt, no.

Turn off CA's water from other western states and watch its legendary agricultural sector crater overnight. Independent CA is going to be in for a rough time without Coloradan water.

And the rest of the (former) USA would have massive shortages of fruits, nuts, and vegetables.  It works both ways.

Since everyone seems to think that California's votes don't count in US elections, I don't see why not.
