Caught up with Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del), who like Pelosi says he might have retired had Hillary won. Now inclined to seek 4th term.

I like Sen. Carper. He's a centrist. He should run again and again.

I get the logic of wanting to hold the fort, but its funny to me that people would rather stay when they're the minority than when they can actually accomplish things that help people.

Accomplish things that help people? You must be one of those naive Bernie types who need to learn how the party works. You don't need to be in the majority to vote to give more power to the CIA, which is Tom Carper's only reason for existing.

It's probably better for Democrats to focus on bringing in new blood in the House, but it's disappointing regardless to see so few retirements this cycle.

Uh, lol?  The post included Pelosi and others like them who choose not to retire to stay in the minority.  Not just Carper.  Thanks for your input on my personal character though.  I'll be sure to take your advice to heart.

Like publicunofficial said, it's unfortunate to see so many Democrats who are keeping the door shut for freshman Senators, especially in a time where it needs young faces. It's also a shame that there's not really a bench for ambitious young Democrats willing to primary these old Senators out.

I also don't the argument Pelosi and Carper make that now that Trump's president, they need to stand their ground. Like, you watch your whole neoliberal reality begin to crumble, so you decide to further entrench yourself in the system?

Piss off, Tom.

Unlike Manchin, Democrats would be smart to primary him.

If you're a progressive how exactly is Jack Markell better than Tom Carper?

Biden 2018? I actually think he'd be good to have back in the Senate.

I don't know much about Jack Markell.  I don't know much about Delaware in general, other than that it shouldn't be a state (it's an eyesore on the map, it's less interesting than the Oklahoma Panhandle, fraudulent credit cards is its main export, and driving through it is fcking hell) and Joe Biden is hands down the only great thing to come from it.

But Democrats should at least try to be a little creative here.

Biden is as good as you can get in Delaware, but sadly he is complacent - he will not run against Tom Carper.

The articles I just read about Lisa Blunt Rochester make me think she would be pretty good.  I doubt she would primary Carper though since she interned for him years ago.  I wouldn't be surprised to see her run for the seat in 2024.

Jack Markell is definitely not going to run for anything in the near future. Several years down the road, he might run.

Tom Carper is her mentor and has supported her run for the House seat, so you're definitely correct that she's not going to primary him.

you can't just leave us hanging like that.

And why is everyone so sure that Markell isn't running?

He probably runs if we get a surprise retirement from Carper, but why would he primary Carper?
