None.

Beyond OH and IA, Trump, and only Trump, had the ability to expand the map.

To win VA/CO, the Republican would need to move left on social and cultural issues.

Meanwhile, Trump proved that to win the Upper Midwest, the GOP could not run a doctrinaire supply sider.

No Republican Presidential Candidate can win Virginia for the next 20 years, barring a massive change to the political dynamics in this country or an absolute blowout election.

You really think no Republican could win a D+3 (at most) state?

Dems took Michigan and Wisconsin for granted too.

John Kasich , and Rubio

Plus if Bernie was the nominee Trump would have won Virginia but of course lost the rust belt.

If Tim Kaine wasn't the VP candidate it would probably be as close as Florida.

Whichever Republican could have gotten Congress to cede NOVA to D.C. without the Supreme Court striking them down.

Every non-populist, non-religious right candidate would've won it without too much of a problem (so, Kasich and Rubio would've carried it easily). A religious right candidate, like Cruz, would've been a 50/50 shot, and it would've depended on the vicissitudes of the campaign. A populist candidate could not have won.

None.

Beyond OH and IA, Trump, and only Trump, had the ability to expand the map.

Only Trump had the power to win MI (and probably PA as well, but I'm less certain of that; Toomey 2010 margins in NEPA and the hinterlands combined with 2016 margins in the Philly burbs are a plausible non-Trump path to victory, but I don't know what non-PA Republican, besides maybe Kasich, could've pulled that off), but CO/MN/NV/VA were all winnable for a different sort of Republican (and even among Trump's states, WI could also have been won by a different Republican, though the coalition would've looked very different from Trump's, since they wouldn't have gained anywhere near as much in the rural west of the state but would not have bled in the suburbs like Trump did).

Kasich could've gotten this map:

Kasich would have lost it in a squeaker (think.. NM 2000 or something like that), but no other Republican would have come close. VA is gone for Republicans.

Assuming Kaine was still the Democratic VP nominee, none, but Gilmore and Kasich would have come within a point, and Rubio within 3. Without Kaine, Gilmore wins it by 5, Kasich wins it by 3, Rubio by 0.5. More or less. 2020 will be harder, but Trump, as an anti-establishment outsider, is a bad fit. By 2028, it should be D+6 or so. The only way Republicans can get it back is by heavily gutting the size of the federal government and hoping all those workers leave the state. I hate admitting it, but I don't think anything can be done. At least Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa are moving the other way. Smiley

None of them, Virginia is almost lock Dem now.

This, it's New Maryland.
