1. Trump turns out to be an average, mediocre President his first term.
2. Rust belt continues its trend towards Republican with Minnesota turning red.
3. Dems investments in the southwest/southeast strategy pay off in NC and AZ but comes up short in FL and GA.
4. Colorado is a fluke
5. The Democratic nominee gets into a scandal where a tape of her/him resurfaces a week before the General election. The tape is from after they lost the Connecticut primary during the second Super Tuesday. In the tape, He/she is bitterly ridiculing the state for being a bunch of elitist snot nosed book worm geeks.

I was sort of with you until I saw Connecticut.

In hindsight I think they meant to tack Rhode Island as Republican, not Connecticut. Change Colorado back to Dem and I can definitively see this map in 4-8 years time.

Lolwut? Rhode Island is one of the most Democratic states in the country. Trump had massive appeal there, more than any Republican since Bush, and still lost by 14.

It's trended 14-15 points Democratic from 2000-2016. Certainly has potential to be the Indiana (going for Obama in 2008) of 2020*.

Trump is popular, pushes hard on immigration, and the Democratic candidate or VP candidate is black

Connecticut liberals flood the Research Triangle, and some natural disaster forces most of ME-01 to move to Arizona.  Then, it doesn't look too bad!

Trump retires. It's Fmr. Speaker Paul Ryan, who retired on October 29, 2018, and former Governor Brian Sandoval; against Mayor Bill De Blasio/Governor Kyrsten Sinema.
