Young people. They probably skew white.

Young whites, split between Sanderistas and Young Republicans. Definitely skew male.

If you believe the exit polls, age was a far bigger factor than sex or race in determining who voted 3rd party this time.  Party ID was of course also a big factor, though people voting 3rd party for president might simply be calling themselves “independent” this time because of their presidential vote, rather than the other way around:

% voting 3rd party:
age 18-29: 9%
age 30-44: 8%
age 45-64: 4%
age 65+: 3%
Democrats: 3%
Republicans: 4%
Independents: 12%

men: 7%
women: 5%
white: 6%
non-white: 5%
college graduate: 6%
non-college graduate: 5%
under $50k income: 6%
$50-100k income: 5%
over $100k income: 6%
voted for the Democratic candidate in my US House race: 5%
voted for the Republican candidate in my US House race: 5%

The biggest group to vote 3rd party was Mormons.  They went 16% for third party candidates, though I’m assuming that’s mostly McMullin voters rather than Johnson voters.

Unfortunately, this is for all 3rd party voters combined (Johnson/Stein/McMullin/everyone else), and the exit poll doesn’t separate Johnson out from the others.  But Johnson was of course the biggest 3rd party vote getter nationally.
