Question in title. Would Trump run as an independent if the Republicans turf him outta here in their primary?

The two-party duopoly wouldn't let an independent have any chance. The best shot for a third choice is the libertarians, or greens (although less likely), to continue growing.

Perot did better then those pissant third parties ever have or will. The fact that Perot did so much better then they did, not mentioning third party successes, in Maine and Minnesota, and Vermont. They show that indepents actually can win. Libertarians and Greens failure to gain steam, is because they're percieved as radicals. Noone wants them in office but the fringe.

For an independent to win, I think there would have to be at least four serious candidates in the race. If only one independent ran, he/she would end up taking more votes from one of the two candidates than the other, and would simply tip the balance.

You know that, a, those two hate each other, and b, if you have a ticket with two people from the same state you forfeit that state's electoral votes (so it basically never happens)?

I didn't know they hated each other. Besides that ticket, I think Huntsman could run as an Independent and do well.

Glenn Beck would really glom on to John Huntsman since they're both Mormons and Huntsman has been a mentor of sorts to Beck in the past.

The obvious answer here is clearly Donald Trump.

Nobody. As long as the Electoral system stays as it is it will always be a two-party system. A third party couldn't even crack 5% in the year when the two parties nominated the most unpopular, alienating candidates in history.

Aside from Trump, nobody. The climate for an independent to win is vastly different than our own polarized, FPTP society now.
