Tender, in a FPO/SPO coalition, how would differences in migration policy be worked out?  I would think that the price for FPO participation would be pretty high on that issue, with FPO wanting a pretty low overall quota.  Would enough of the SPO agree to that? Perhaps such a coalition might see splits in both parties?

if SPÖ/FPÖ govern together, the vienna wing of the party would be shunned anyway and the FPÖ would somehow "compromise".

the right wing of the SPÖ is getting stronger anyway....if the party survives it.

no split inside of the FPÖ this time...it nearly killed them 2002 and leader parties are controlled by...leaders.

Hard to say, it will largely depend on who comes out ahead. If the FPÖ finishes ahead of the SPÖ and they somehow enter a coalition (with or without Kern in it), there will likely be a low immigration quota set.

If the SPÖ comes out on top of the FPÖ (and with or without Strache in the government), they could have more sway in determining a slightly higher quota, but much lower than the current one.

Anyway, I guess the SPÖ would only enter a coalition with the FPÖ, if the FPÖ agrees to the basic principle of accepting the EU and Austria's membership there as part of the coalition contract (some smaller EU "reform plans" on part of the FPÖ included, as part of other compromises).

Any news regarding the "majority bonus" for the biggest party? If there's a snap general election this year, is it more possible to beheld with or without these bonus?

I'm sure that the SPÖVP coalition will break in the next week(s) and we get that election. SPÖ can only win: By now, Kern is popular, Strache not Hofer will be FPÖ leader, ÖVP will not burn Kurz. This could be different in 2018. With Kern not being "new" anymore, Hofer as FPÖ leader and Kurz as ÖVP leader, it could be a blowout for SPÖ.

Nevertheless, if FPÖ can't convert the current situation into a 33%+ first place finish, then they don't deserve to govern. It's like playing Soccer with one goal up and the other team being one man down. If you can't win, you're uterly stupid.

The "Majority Bonus" is only part of Kern's "Plan A", which he outlined in his speech.
Like in Greece? Yikes!

New elections unlikely now.

It seems they got their act together and are talking about the policy "update" for 2017 again.

It's not as if you guys have a problem with too many parties in the government. Greece has a two-party government and so does Austria. Here in the Netherlands, that reasoning would perhaps be justified (even if we currently happen to have a two-party government too), but I don't think it makes sense in Austria.

Israel nowadays has a 3.25% threshold, almost as high as Austria's. But yeah, in the past it was worse.

Today is the INAUGURATION of Alexander Van der Bellen (Greens) as the 12th President of Austria.

The swearing-in ceremony will start at 10am, with a live-stream starting at 9am (that's in 30 minutes).

Van der Bellen will be sworn in at a joint session of parliament in front of members of both chambers. Sonja Ledl-Rossmann will administer the oath of office (VdB won't use "so help me God" btw).

As we all know, VdB was elected with 50.3% in the May runoff and 53.8% in the December runoff.

Van der Bellen about the fear of terror, climate change and fast technological changes:

"When I was a kid in school, I was looking down the 3 meter board in the swimming lesson and was like F**k, really ? But I eventually took the jump. I also took the 5 meter jump ..."

"Please let me close with a reference to the youngest in the audience here today ... we, who are here today, we who are of medieval appearance (*laughter*), we need your courage and bravery because you will build our future."

Or something like this.

I hope I can post the English version of his speech here.
