He probably meant it well, but this certainly won't improve his image with FPÖ-voters or right-wing ÖVP voters and to reconcile a still polarized country ...

Improving his image with FPÖ voters shouldn't be a priority.

Van der Bellen was also asked about his opinion on [illegal] dual-citizenships for Austro-Turks. Just recently, a list with all eligible Austro-Turkish voters in the referendum was sent to the ORF, the Green Peter Pilz and to the FPÖ's Strache.

After verification, it looks like the lists might be real and authorities can start checking who has an illegal dual citizenship and if it can be revoked. It is estimated that around 20.000-30.000 people have such an illegal dual citizenship.

While the Green Pilz is reluctant to hand over the list to authorities, the FPÖ has already announced they will do so (The FPÖ also says the Greens are reluctant because many of their politicians with Turkish background are on that list). Several states have already declared their interest for the list.

Anyway, VdB said the following:

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

"I don't see a problem with the fact that someone has a dual-citizenship. I don't see what harm it causes for the Austrian state."

...

That is intersting, because a recent OGM poll for the "Kurier" showed that Austrians favour the exact opposite of Van der Bellen on this issue:

* Should dual-citizenships (with some exceptions) remain illegal ? 76% Yes, 16% No.

* Should authorities increase their efforts to screen for illegal dual-citizenship holders and to revoke it if necessary ? 83% Yes, 10% No.

* Should there be an amnesty for dual-citizenship holders who return their foreign citizenship within a certain timeframe ? 62% Yes, 27% No.

...

On the French election he said:

Quote

"I'm optimistic that in France the pro-European centrist and defender of pro-European values, Emmanuel Macron, will win. We have to get rid of our thinking that anti-European tendencies and movements are gaining ground in Europe. This is over."

Not only are center- or center-leftist journalists *shocked* about Van der Bellen's gaffe, but the FPÖ is already firing hard against the President:

Herbert Kickl (FPÖ general secretary): "VdB's comments are a rampage, integration-wise. It didn't take long until the most independent of all independents removed his mask and showed his real intentions."

I really don't understand what is bad about having dual-citizenship. I even find think that is a very useful thing, particularly to travel.

Besides the fact that those dual citizenships are illegal cause people first gave up their turkish citizenship to get an austrian one and then secretly regained the turkish one, the election results of the austrian dual citizenship holders are shocking again and again.

Oliver Pink from the "Presse" newspaper for example (a centrist) and Joe Kalina (a former SPÖ politician, turned major pollster). In their tweets today.

Well, i would prefer calling them liberal (european meaning) and center-right but i agree that Sascha's comments were badly timed and worded, even while he obviously wanted to help kids feel stronger.

Meanwhile, VdB says his comments about headscarves for all women can be compared with the situation of Jews in Denmark, who were deported to concentration camps. Because they were wearing the yellow badges with "Jew" on them, many non-Jewish Danes became solidaric with the Jews and started to wear the badges themselves.

According to VdB, all Austrian women should now wear headscarves in solidarity with Muslim women wearing them, because they are constantly harassed in public like the Jews back then.

VdB (currently on a trip in Slovakia) tried to clarify his controversial remarks today:

"We can be happy if we don't have bigger problems than ... headscarves. I'm no friend of the headscarf, but there's freedom of speech here and some form of freedom to choose clothing. That enables every woman to choose on her own what she wants to wear on her head or if she wants to wear something on her head."

VdB also talked how he visited the ETH university in Zurich and how he met a female professor there with a headscarf.

He said: "I hope that nobody thinks that she's a bad professor just because she's wearing a headscarf."

A new poll by "Market" for the economic "Trend" magazine shows that Austrians hate politcal correctness and want their politicians to say things as they are and not meander around an issue in a politically correct way:

1) "Is political correctness justified ?"

2) "Should politicians etc. be very careful in voicing "politically incorrect" positions (like the ones shown below) ?"

3) "Do you agree with the following positions that have been recently said by politicians ?"

"Austro-Turks that voted for Erdogan in the referendum on April 16 should go back to Turkey."

"Many of the refugees that came to Austria in 2015/16 were not real refugees fleeing war."

"People from Islamic cultures/countries cannot be integrated into our culture."

"Austrians should be given priority over foreigners when it comes to jobs, applications to university and applications to housing."

"Politics is too concerned about minority rights, rather than problems that concern most people."

"The EU has no future."

Another study of Austrian Muslims by the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin found that 55% of Austrian Muslims are classified as religious extremists.

79% of Austrian Muslims polled said that "you cannot trust Jews".
73% said that "the law of Islam (= sharia) is above the law of the state".
69% are opposed to homosexual people.

A comparative sample of Austrian Christians showed that 9% are anti-semitic and 13% are homophobic.

A new Vienna poll (Research Affairs/Ö24, conducted April 25-27) shows devastating losses for the SPÖ and huge gains for the FPÖ (not surprising, considering all the recent problems within the SPÖ and mayor Häupl's refusal to step down). In fact, it's the lowest polling for the SPÖ ever and the highest ever for the FPÖ:

40% FPÖ (+9% compared with 2015)
24% SPÖ (-16%)
15% Greens (+3%)
10% ÖVP (+1%)
  8% NEOS (+2%)
  3% Others (+1%)

The current city government is Red-Green.

The Van der Bellen headscarves comments have resulted in more than 4.300 comments so far below the right-wing Breitbart article and more than 6.700 below the left-liberal Standard article.

The Austrian economy has grown by 2% in the first quarter of 2017 and is also expected to grow by the same rate this year:

It's the highest growth rate since 2011.

Actually, the latest poll showing the Greens at 9% was conducted before VdB's comments.

Don't think the Greens are going much lower than that. Maybe 8%, but that's about it.

Probably not. But many hard-core Greens usually don't give a damn about what he said, because we know how he meant it: in an ironic way, not literally.

Anyway, Greens have to play defense in next years 4 state elections (especially here in Salzburg and Carinthia, but also in Tyrol and Lower Austria).

In Salzburg, the Greens more than doubled their share from 7% to more than 20% in the 2013 state election, after the state SPÖ blew up after the financial/investment scandal from 2012. It's virtually impossible that they can hold their 20%, even tough they did a good job during the last years. But they will lose at least 5%. The fact that they are not losing more has to do with the fact that the SPÖ here is still in shambles. With Walter Steidl, they have a leader who once said he's "only paid 5000€ a month as party leader and that's not enough for him to survive". The 5.000€ a month is ca. 4-times the pension of a retired worker and most of them were loyal SPÖ-voters. Until his comment. And that still sticks, even after a few years.

In Carinthia, the Greens almost doubled as well in 2013, after the Hypo bank blew up there. It was mostly a FPÖ/BZÖ scandal that cost them a lot of votes, while SPÖ and Greens profited. Still, the Greens have to play defense there as well, despite doing a good job in the government.

Same in Tyrol (good job by the Greens in the ÖVP-led government, recently presenting another surplus in the state budget this year). The Greens have a relatively high floor in Tyrol of 10-12% because of Innsbruck, where they always do well in elections.

Lower Austria is rather meaningless, because the Greens historically do badly there.

Tender, that Vienna poll is amazing.  It implies that the SPO would do better outside of Vienna than in the city itself, if you look at the nationwide polls.  Also implies that lots of ex-SPO voters are going to FPO not the other parties.  Does this make sense for a city like Vienna?
