Has New Mexico become a permanent Blue State? I think because of people moving to the state(just like Colorado and Virginia)has gotten it to become one just like Colorado and Virginia and I don't know if the GOP will be able to turn that around. What do y'all think?

Yeah, I would expect it to swing to the Dems in 2020 even if Trump improves by 3-4 points nationally.

It voted a little over 6 points to the left of the nation, and it trended Republican in the last two elections. While it definitely leans toward the Democrats, it isn't unconceivable for a Republican to win it, especially one who is a better fit for it than Trump. I'd say that it is Likely D in a 50-50 election.

There were Republicans that ran this year that could've taken it.

If Republicans win New Mexico, they've probably already won.

New Mexico is a blue state, but it's not California or New York just yet.

This and if the Republicans win NM, it's in a blowout.

It's not very Urban, and it's not all that educated either.   It's Democratic strength has most likely plateaued at this point, unless Republicans continue to nose-dive with hispanics.

Assuming Republicans don't plummet with Hispanics, it's really only Leans D.  It actually bucked the trend of the Southwest this year by trending Republican.

True, but it was only by .03 points, effectively zero.

More like Likely D,  but yes, in the future I see Colorado being the more Democratic state in the west, along with Nevada most likely.

Trump did unusually well among very old Spanish-speaking communities in the north of the state (as in communities that have been there since before 1844). Whether another Republican could repeat that success in a Presidential election, well...we'll see.

Johnson getting 9.34% complicates things. I wouldn't be quick to label a state safe one way or another given the Rust Belt this year.

It's pretty much been a blue state since 2008. Yeah, it's conceivable that a Republican who's not toxic among Latinos could do well there, but if Republicans win New Mexico, they've already won in a landslide (or near landslide).

It doesn't even get listed as a swing state anymore by most prognosticators, which says a lot. Down ballot, NM-1 has shifted hard from even being competitive anymore. It's a blue state.

Yeah hopefully the GOP can win it from time to time and the same goes with Nevada.

It's getting there, but we must remember that 2016 is the third time in its history that New Mexico didn't vote for the winner. The other two were 1976 and 2000.

Did Vermont become a permanent red state when it voted against FDR?

Nothing is permanent in politics.

And in 2000 and 2016, it voted for the popular vote winner.

I just think it's BS that Republicans can keep gaining everywhere even when they run the most unprepared candidate in history. I want to see a Democrat pick up a state like SC, GA, or MT.

I'd say New Mexico has quite a ways to go yet. In addition to the rapid diversification of NM's electorate, new generations of New Mexican voters are not friendly towards Republicans. New Mexico has real potential to be a reliably mid-high double-digit blue state within the next 15 - 20 years.
