Obviously it would just be a caretaker unless it was Cramer, which is why I think it will be him.

Rick Berg would probably lose again, lol.

But it would almost certainly be Cramer. There will be a special election, though.

Will it be like the Virginia situation with Kaine if Clinton won where there will be an appointment soon, a special election in 2017, and then the regular election in 2018?

I've still seen no indication that Heitkamp is going to accept the offer, although I recognize that she might.

If it does happen, I'm thinking Burgum appoints Cramer and he goes on to win in 2017 and 2018.

Actually upon looking it up, there's no appointment, just a special election. So if Heitkamp leaves we'll have to live with 99 Senators for a while.

I'm thinking Heitkamp will take the cabinet position.

Oh well,  one less easy pickup for the GOP in 2018.

Yeah because they'd already have it, allowing them to divert would-be resources to other races.

Harry Reid said today that Heitkamp has no interest in joining the Trump administration but Manchin may be interested and that's why they're trying to keep him happy.

Cramer is probably going to beat Heitkamp anyway in 2018.

Who would Justice appoint in case Manchin joins the Trump administration?

No, he just said that he did not think she would accept the post.

Tbh, he's probably right. Several other ND Democrats also do not think she will accept the post. The GOP needs to focus on taking her down in 2018. My guess is that she'll be the target no. 1 when this is over.

To be honest I think it's more a strategy made by her for 2018.

I recognize I may be wrong.

She's a savy politician btw, do not underestimate her.

I'm not sure what she's aiming at, but it seems to me that Heitkamp would be more likely to leave the Senate than Manchin.

Any links for that? Haven't heard any additional news on what Heitkamp does...

It would be such a shame if Donnelly and Manchin lost but Heitkamp won in 2018. Heck, I even prefer McCaskill and Tester over her.

What do you have against Tester?

I am glad you are seeing the light. McCaskill is the best Democratic US Senator.

The obvious choice is Tomblin, right?

If we have to lose Heitkamp or Manchin I'd rather lose Manchin; he's further right and Democrats have a bench in WV.

I said other because nobody gets appointed. There are no gubernatorial appointments. Heitkamp's replacement would be elected. I think Cramer would win the special election.

Any chance he would appoint himself? He seems like about the best option in terms of Democrats actually being able to hold the seat (if anyone other than Manchin could hold it at all).

LOL he may very well lose it and end up with nothing. It requires him giving up governor, which he just won, and I believe a Republican would succeed him (Carmichael, Senate President). Earl Ray Tomblin is the logical choice.

They all have to be targeted with everything possible. These are such easy pickups and they could deliver a GOP Senate for at least 6 years.

After a successful term as Governor Justice might be the best Democratic option for Senate, but immediately jumping in after winning an election just seems like desperation. If we can't have Manchin I think Tomblin is the best possible choice.

That's a good point. I was kind of thinking this right after I made that previous post. Would make him look like an opportunist who doesn't care about serving the people.

Yeah, Tomblin (if his approval numbers are OK) is the obvious choice, then.
