Angels We Have Heard On High (even though I still call it In Excelsis Deo) and Hark the Herald Angels Sing are tied for me.  Both beautiful songs.

"In the bleak midwinter," although it's easy to overplay it.

This is my favorite if done right, but it's easy to do poorly.

My top five, in no particular order:

A) O Holy Night
B) Angels We Have Heard on High
C) Hark, the Herald Angels Sing
D) O Come, All Ye Faithful
E) Of the Father's Love Begotten

Carols are good. Not sure about a favourite, but I know what my least favourite is; Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day which is an awful dirge that also happens to be extremely antisemitic.

"In the bleak midwinter," although it's easy to overplay it.

ahaha knew this would be your answer!

I've never actually listened to that one. The title definitely made it sound like it would be bad, but I would have expected it to be treacly and saccharine rather than dirge-like. I looked up the lyrics and, yeah, they're vomitrocious.

There are at least three Rossetti texts that are actually called "Advent", but one (first line "This Advent moon shines cold and clear") comes across as a greatest-hits of other, preexisting Advent hymns; one (first line "Earth grown old, yet still so green") somehow manages to be ludicrously death-obsessed and morbid (even for a poet who used the phrase "born to die" completely convincingly and without a hint of irony a century before Lana Del Rey was born) despite only three of its eleven lines being about death; and one (first line "''Come', Thou dost say to Angels") feels like she's channeling Dickinson and forcing it. "Advent Sunday" has its moments but doesn't strike me as particularly singable.

Silent Night, as well as First Noel and Oh Holy Night thanks to the 90s Weather Channel local forecast versions.

Maybe...Vive le vent, vive le vent, vive le vent d'hiver lalalalaaa, etc.

Which is silly cause it celebrates that bloody winter wind, and who knows why it has so different lyrics than Jingle bells while having same melody.

Ah well, would have also kept something for Stiiiille Naaacht, heeeiiilige Naaacht.

Petit Papa Noël makes u think to presents too, so it's cool, and might be the only originally French one. Just checked though and the melody is inspired from a Russian composer's.

We just not a Christmas country originally...

In no particular order:

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
We Three Kings
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
O Little Town of Bethlehem
There's a Song in the Air
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
That Beautiful Name (not specifically Christmas, but is used a lot and is associated with the season because of its first verse mentioning the annunciation)
Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne

Although "In the Bleak Midwinter" has lyrics that are a bit clichéd, some of the tunes it's been set to are quite beautiful.

I've been told many times before that my grandma used to sing my mom, aunts, and uncles to sleep with "O Holy Night" year-round, so I can't forget that one.  I especially love the anti-slavery verse:

That's beautiful. Wasn't familiar with it before. Thanks.

I found another German one:
Maria durch ein dorwald - Mary walks among the thorns.

I've heard it before, but this rendition, in this place... wow.
I've got to visit Freiburg and go there some day.

Speaking of German songs about thorns and roses, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming is a favorite.

I like O Come O Come Emmanuel a lot. Heard a great version in the indie cinema last week - a guy softly singing then a girl and then sort of a klezmer interlude, wish I could find it.  But here's another rendition that's pretty awesome in it's own way.

O Holy Night by a long shot.

The combination of Silent Night and Night of Silence is always good.  Otherwise I like the more secular ones like Winter Wonderland or Let it Snow.
