We of the more liberal persuasion just got our asses kicked by a narcissistic tangerine clown, riding to victory on a wave of resentment and frustration from white working class voters who felt unrepresented and forgotten for years.

We literally JUST saw the consequences of not appealing to white working class voters, and the first candidates getting the most buzz on here are Keith Ellison and Tulsi Gabbard?

Good to see our first orange President has a decent shot at two terms.

People pushing Ellison think the Dems need to get more populist. Populist is not a synonym for racist.

I don't see why Gabbard would be offensive to WWC voters.

How are you defining WWC? Cause that assertion is hilariously incorrect.

After Kerry lost, we elected a DNC Chair whose said we needed to appeal to guys with Confederate flags on their pickup trucks. We put up people like Heath Shuler and Jim Webb. And Kerry got like 44% in West Virginia. We're in danger of permanently losing our ability to appeal to these people ever again, if it's not already gone.

All the Gabbard talk is from a right wing troll.

Keith Ellison is running for DNC Chair, not President. Voters don't know or care who the DNC Chair is.

Atlas voters are not representative of America as a whole and I know Democrats IRL who like Tulsi.

Yeah and they probably know nothing about her but that she endorsed Bernie, and not her homophobic past, or membership in a literal cult and ties to India's ruling Trumpesque party and Hindu nationalist fascists.

Obama and Clinton used to be against gay marriage, basically every politician who had a career before this decade has.  Democrats voted for them anyway.

Which also shows her to be pretty dumb, this is the equivalent of a Kabbala practicioner coddling to Hasidic groups or some very Westernized Sufi Muslim supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

The lesson we should be learning is that we run and appoint good candidates regardless of their race/gender, not that we have to pick more white men.

Yeah, you can only max out on a declining demographic for so long. Trump's coalition was barely enough in 2016. They are better off paying just enough lip service to them in order to be competitive in PA, MI, WI and MN, while focusing more energy on FL, AZ, GA and NC.

-You know who's a declining demographic? White liberals.

Well, that's not really true, but whatever. Notice I said the WWC is shrinking, not conservatives.

-Oh, it is true. How many White liberals are immigrating into the US? What's their birthrate?

WWC is probably shrinking, but they still have a good deal of Electoral College heft (PA has as many EC votes as IL; MI more than CO and NM combined; OH more than GA; Indiana as many as Massachusetts).

See, here's the thing. WWC aren't the hulking, racist boobs that this sort of sentiment implies. Like seriously, you think so little of working people that you think that they wouldn't vote for someone of another race, or someone who didn't speak like they did?

Barack Obama, for all his faults as President, had a message and a campaign in 2008 that appealed to the whole damned country.* He won the poorest county in West Virginia, just as he turned out black populations in Chicagoland so thoroughly that he swung Indiana.

You know why? Because (as much as he forgot them once he was in office) he communicated a message of hope and change to *all * the communities in this country that so desperately needed it. Whether they were white, black, or latino, rural or urban.

The lesson from '16 is not to retreat from idealism, or that we need a white male candidate. It's that the WWC, like every other American of every other description, wants a leader who A) appears to be a human being B) is charismatic C) they believe will lead in their interest. We put up someone who failed all three tests spectacularly, and surprise, WWC Dems didn't turn out. Like BWC Dems in Milwaukee and Detroit.

Keith Ellison wants to make the Democratic Party more like the kind of party that genuinely appeals to working people. His race, religion, and speech patterns don't matter (not least because he's going to disappear from the public eye should he secure the job).

*Okay, not chickenhawk neocons working at conservative publications, but are they really loyal Americans? They seem pretty devoted to advocating for the death of our soldiers and weakening our position abroad...

The last Democrat to win the WWC was a black community organizer from Chicago's south side.

And remember, these people aren't racists they just have "economic anxiety". So voting for a minority should be no problem for them, right?

WWC hasn't voted democrat since 1964

lol no.

1968- The WWC, (bar the south), voted solidly Humphrey
1972- The WWC areas were more democratic than white middle class areas.
1976: The WWC, were overwhelmingly democratic, especially compared to the white middle class.
1980: The WWC, and WWC areas were where the Carter strength remained, while the white middle class abandoned him.
1984: The WWC, were where most of Mondale's strength from white voters came, in many cases winning WWC territory.
1988: The WWC, that voted for Reagan (not much mind you) come back to the democratic party, Dukakis smashed in most WWC areas (including many areas in the south).
1992: The WWC, solidly voted for Clinton, though white middle class, were now being more democratic.
1996: Same as 1996.
2000: Increased Middle-Classifying of the democratic party, and a severe drop off in the democratic vote with the WWC, though quite a bit more democratic than the white middle class.
2004: Same 2004, but less of the WWC vote for Kerry, though still at a higher rate than the white middle class.
2008: Bounce Up of in the WWC vote with Obama winning, while he overall loses the white vote. The WWC only in the south swung to the McCain.
2012: Slight Difference between the WWC, and the white middle class, in where the WWC vote was lost by Obama but still more democratic than the White Middle Class vote. The WWC South, heavily turns away from the republic
2016: Strong Swing towards Trump among the WWC, while Clinton swings the White Middle Class, resulting, in the WWC, being more republican that the White middle class for the first time, since post FDR.

The WWC, voted for Humphrey, Carter definitely once by a lot, but maybe even in '80, Dukakis and Clinton both times. The WWC, is where democrats got much more of a % of vote, in every presidential election until 2000.

Obama the first time won the WWC. Kerry and Gore, were stronger amongst the WWC (coming close to win it), then the white middle class.

For a leftist party, to abandon the working class of any race, is a sign that party much die out and disintegrate.
