UW-Whitewater, 4 year state school that's known to be good for business in the state. All of the WI state schools are really high quality in the end, they're not a prestigious private school or Ivy League but they are good and you don't get hosed in tuition.

UW. It had all the pros and cons of being a yuge school. In some regards, it tries too hard, and loves to tell everyone about its high rankings in all of the university ranking systems, as though that is the end-all-be-all of the college experience. At the same time, the school is basically run as a brand which loosely ties together the various colleges and departments. As a result, I have always felt way more affinity and connection to my college (the Jackson School of International Studies) than the university as a whole, and everything from the advising to the classes were a better and more personal experience after I got into my major than when I was trying to deal with the university as a whole.

And just as any school, I'm sure, the classes and teachers were widely varying in quality. I had three or so teachers who I really felt a connection to and who really set me on a good course. At the same time, I had classes with teachers who were very disconnected, and of course the teachers who basically just hold classes to promote their books and such.

One thing I am quite pleased about, though, is that I am quite sure I got pretty much the best education I could have gotten for the price I did. In-state tuition was quite reasonable and I've managed to graduate debt-free.

I should note that I'm actually prouder of and play up my UMass connection more than my BU connection, partially because UMass is more (for lack of better words) populist and tatterdemalion. They're trying to change that image by putting in a ton of this new-built plate-glass architecture crapola that costs a fortune to heat in the winter. It's horrible and indicative of extreme vapidity on the part of the administration. Most of the preexisting campus is either Georgian Revival or Brutalist, both styles that I dislike individually but which actually age quite well together.
