This isn't a meaningful classification system.

A Russell Group, but not Oxbridge, UCL or Imperial. So the equivalent of Option 2.

I have been affiliated with four Big Ten, Land Grant institutions.  Well, one of them was an ACC school when I enrolled, but it quickly rectified that Wink

Since I simply empty quoted and felt bad for the OP, I will use this opportunity to semi-attention whore. Smiley

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business in Spring 2014.  Was dead-set on the University of Illinois (been an Illini fan my whole life, from Peoria, etc.), but none of my high school friends wanted to go with me, and I had a girlfriend in Iowa City at the time.  I don't regret going to Iowa at all, but there are definitely parts of me that would have liked to spend my undergrad years in Champaign.

As for how Iowa "ranks," I suppose that depends on your perspective.  It usually ranks in the top 70 nationally/top 25 public schools in the country, and the business school usually ranks significantly higher than that.  I have learned in my years since college, though, that where you went to school - even your GPA - matters about 1/4th as much as how personable you are in the interview and, later, what work is on your resume.  It's cliche, but people evaluate potential employees on how much they'd enjoy working with them (which obviously includes how good you'd be at the technical aspects of the job, too).  Period.

I attend the most generic small town college one could imagine.

This, albeit in one of the most rural, desolate areas of Virginia imaginable. But hey, nice running rivers and waterfalls everywhere.

BA at a small highly ranked liberal arts college;
MS and PhD at an elite but not ivy-league eastern university;
post doc and academic teaching career at a typical large state university.

FWIW, I got my BA at what most people would consider Generic University (University of Massachusetts Amherst, although its reputation worldwide is apparently much higher than it is in the United States, possibly because it has the word "Massachusetts" in its name) but in a field (Japanese) that it's stronger than average in. I'm now at Boston University, which is probably in the second category (especially in my current field, theology, although I've been somewhat disappointed in aspects of the way I've been taught here, and liked life at UMass way better overall).

There's something in between "generic university" and prestigious university.  Like lower than top 100 but still top 250.

Indeed, whenever I mention it overseas people ask me if it's the same as MIT.
