South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next director of the Office of Management and Budget. He will be likely confirmed. With that, could former South Carolina 2010 and 2014 Democratic gubernatorial nominee Vincent Sheheen run for the seat and win in 2018? Once South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster creates a special election, he lives in the district and could run, which is a pretty large district.

He'd be the best Democrat for the race, though I'd still call it Likely R

I suspect he's damaged goods by now.  For that matter, I wasn't too impressed with his 2014 campaign.

That and he hasn't run for a federal race yet. Also in 2014 he did way worse. Still Likely R, and closer to safe than lean.

I think he can make it a little competitive.

Sheheen says people have asked him to consider running for Congress, and he laid out what his message would be if he decided to run. Sounds like he is actually thinking about running. I hope he does, I think he could make this race competitive

Thomas McElveen is probably the best bet from that district... and could win... although I'm not sure if he would run.

I wonder if he will call his opponent a "whore" this time too? He's an HP and will lose.

He's a no-nonsense moderate Democrat. He'd make the race competitive.

Maybe Fran(cis) Person could run again.  He's one Person who I wouldn't mind seeing in Congress.

He may have won the 5th in 2010, but only on the old borders.

The district only moved like two points to the right in redistricting, didn't it?

I love to think big, but this almost an R+10 district.

And not especially elastic to boot. "Normal" conservative Republican must win it without much difficulty. Only far-right winger may have some problems...

Sheheen probably couldn't win this in a normal year, but in a low turnout special election against a wacko? it's possible.

That was before 2010. Gene Taylor also won MS-04 many times. And a lot of other southern Democrats - too. Now almost all these seats are unwinnable even in a wave year.
