Friendly amendment. Can we switch the first day to April 12th?

Just thought I'd chime in my two cents for whats they're worth.

A day celebrating the drafting of our constitution sounds like a fantastic cause for a regional holiday although April 12th would be a bad call IMO. No need to tie a holiday to a day that would been seen as negative to what I'm sure would be plurality in the region.

As for the second part regardless of our personal feelings I feel like its setting bad precedent to start enshrining in law days meant to mock individuals or celebrate their fall. However I could see it being amended to read that a holiday be established to celebrate individual liberty and serve as a constant reminder and warning to never elect those who would be tyrants. I would say Sic Semper Tyrannis Day but John Wilks Booth ruined that otherwise awesome phrase.

April is lovely in the south, and not close to another holiday. Edit, save for Easter. July already has independence day. If it were Texas, it could be Juneteenth, as we don't have a June holiday. Or perhaps in August with the Feast of Assumption?

I support the first holiday but I consider it inappropriate to celebrate the death of a former head of state from another country.

1945 – U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies while in office; Vice President Harry Truman, becomes President upon Roosevelt's death.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_12

Not sure might be something else, but anyways I don't see any purpose having a holiday on April 12th.

edit: Could possibly be this:1864 – American Civil War: The Battle of Fort Pillow: Confederate forces kill most of the African American soldiers that surrendered at Fort Pillow, Tennessee.

Anyways Awful reasons to have a holiday on that date.

Also, oddly enough the final surrender of the Army of the Tennessee.  Bookends both the start and the end of the Civil War.

As there hasn't been any activity on here in more than a week, I motion for a vote.

I am going to vote Nay. We already have Thanksgivings at the same time as the proposed "Death of Castro day".

Aye

I think that part of the act was removed.

The amendment was proposed. It was not voted up or down, so this vote is on the original version of the bill. Sad

Why don't we just suspend the call for a final vote and vote first on the amendment?

No one objected to the amendment and thus it was considered friendly and adopted as I understand it

That is correct, dfw. My bad for not acknowledging as such formally--the amendment automatically went through due to the absense of objections.

I am in error.

I will change my vote to YES now that I've been appraised that the bill is being passed as amended.

With 4 votes in favor (3 if I'm strictly enforcing time limits so thankfully it makes no difference), 0 against, and 1 member not voting, this legislation has passed.
