It would be nice if either candidate had been half as interested in peace as Eisenhower 1956.

Now or some unspecified time in the future?

Trump is very worrying, but I don't see him as more likely to start a serious war than Clinton, albeit for diffrent reasons.

One of his near immediate successors? Yes.

It's already happened.  The War on Terror (2001-present) is global in scale

I think it will - but I don't think it'll be nuclear, nor do I expect the US to be directly involved.

There's going to be some massive, global upheaval in Europe, Asia, and the ME over the next decade, though. Bad times are coming for the world and the US may be fairly insulated from it unless China does something very stupid.

I was going to say something like this.

Modern warfare isnt really conducive a WW2 style major out and out conflict; increasingly since the cold war, a "Global" conflict basically means numerous localised wars, but with the major powers playing behind the scenes. Think the way Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia have intervened in the Syrian conflict.

It will happen at some point. Maybe in the next 20 years. Doubtful that it will happen under Trump though

Syria is more of an example of a proxy war. Proxy wars were a substitute for direct confrontation between the powers after WWII.

Super powers would rather fight proxy wars until one's economy collapses. I don't see World War 3 happening soon.

The former is definitely more likely than the latter but the degree of collapse needed to lose a war...well, time makes fools of us all.

No. A bunch of fearmongers in the media might want it to happen though.

I wouldn't be surprised if a rubicon is seemingly crossed in the near future (the most obvious being the usage of nuclear weaponry in some sense or the United Nations being rendered impotent due to a great power withdrawing) but I don't think conflict between the great powers is likely at all. If anything, it would be more likely to be a complicated series of regional civil wars tearing countries apart as opposed to Great Game styles of nation-state conflict - all powers and their citizens are far too bound to each other, economically, socially, culturally and technologically to really go total war on each other.

People really need to stop asking this. It desensitizing people into supporting "small-scale" wars.

Over the current Iran business? No.

Starting with the Berlin Blockade of 1948 there has been uncountable major international crisises in the past 75 years and none of them led to World War III.

If WW3 were truly so easy to achieve, this thread's title would actually be "Will WW20 happen?"

Not under Trump, but after him yes.  He will cause the breakup of NATO, setting off a series of chain reactions that will ultimately lead to another major conflict.  I have no doubt in my mind that NATO will not survive a 2nd Trump term (CC Joe Biden).

Lol, i'm not a fan of Trump, but you must be delusional to think that.

Trump is a clown, and everything but a working class president, but he surely understands the working class, and is smart enough to not create another proxy war, let alone world war.

World War 3 is pure fiction. Might it happen? Sure, wars aren't going to end someday soon, but it will be entirely different from how we envision it today.

The only thing that might happen is that terrorism become such a part of our daily lives that we all have to live under a constant threat, and that we might be de facto at state of war with religious extremists to defend our culture, traditions and way of living. That's my only fear.

Climate change is the biggest threat of today, not the possibility of a third world war.
