Liberty was a very religious party who believed that slavery was an sin that must be ended asap (itself a tactical split from William Garrison's radical AASS), while Free Soil was a bit more cynical/tactical, mainly opposing the expansion of slavery in the west rather than wishing to ban slavery immediately.

Well, in that case, Liberty

Theocracy is bad, and Liberty nominated a former slaveholder twice. Free Soil!

I like Free Soil's name better, and lets be honest, if the Republicans hadn't formed, one of those two parties would have basically morphed into the 1860s Republicans anyway.

They weren't theocrats, and who cares if they nominated a former slaveholder, espeically in the context of the 19th century, especially if you want to compare Van Buren's former record on issues related to slavery.

But Liberty Party did support alcohol prohibition in their later years, and the more incrementalist, big tent approach of Free Soil made sense for its time.

Free Soil, but if not for religion it would be Liberty.

Never mind that that former slaveholder became an outspoken opponent of slavery.
