If you forget about his age and health , is there a way that Byrd could have ever been defeated in a senate election or was he popular enough to keep winning no matter how GOP WV goes on every other level.

I don't know about decades from now, but I think he'd win comfortably in 2018. He just wouldn't get the 78% he got in 2000.

Yes. He was very entrenched in WV, despite being to the left of the state.

2012: He would have probably got about 56%. In 2018, I don't really know. He would have been toast with Clinton, but with Trump he'd have a chance. Byrd would crush Stupid Alex by 20% or so, but Jenkins would have given him a good run. But I'd still say Byrd narrowly edges it out.

Yeah, when's the last time a WV senator lost re-election?

Yeah, when's the last time a WV senator lost re-election?
After winning a special election or being appointed? 1959.
After winning an actual full term? 1949.

Interestingly enough? It was the same guy. Chapman Revercomb.

Byrd would have won reelection in 2012, and if he were alive today, he'd be running for reelection again. Even if he was barely clinging to life by the tip of his fingers, he'd be brought out of the hospital room for a token campaign appearance or two to seal the deal.

No. He was too much of an institution to ever lose his seat. He would have been reelected comfortably in 2012, and if he were still around, he would be on track to win in 2018 too, though he was born in 1917 so he'd be turning 100 this year, so even a token campaign might have been too much for him.
