Today, polls indicate that the majority of US citizens support same-sex marriage. However, in the 1990s and 2000s I'm sure things were different. So (if you did), when did you start supporting same-sex marriage, and what led you to change your opinion?

I have always supported it. We've had SSM since I was 7.

Never (R), although I've always supported civil unions.

I do, however, acknowledge that it is the law of the land.

Same, but since I was born in 1999 and only had any idea what it means between 2008-2012, I guess that's the answer for me.

Yeah, I figured many would, that's why there's the 1900s-2000 option- I think it covers anyone Tongue

I never opposed it, I merely didn't have political opinions until 2012 at the earliest.

I was staunchly opposed to LGBT rights for an extremely long time and was extremely homophobic until about 2009 (joke's on pre-2009 me, I'm bisexual lmao).

- I started supporting LGBT Adoption rights around late 2009.
- I started talking with LGBT people to try and understand their view on things and that slowly started to get me to temper and liberalize my views on LGBT issues. This was instrumental in getting me to support Democrat efforts to repeal DADT.
- I started supporting a very limited form of civil unions around 2011. I also stopping support a federal ban on LGBT marriage and believed it was a state's issue.
- Around 2011 I started to slowly stop suppressing my sexuality and by 2012 I understood that I wasnt' straight. I admitted to myself that I was either bisexual or gay late 2012.
- March 2013, I started supporting LGBT marriage, ENDA and other LGBT protections. I believe Hillary Clinton beat me out by a week or so in supporting Marriage equality ha.
- I started coming out to friends in 2014 and 2015.
- In 2016, I stopped using "Gay" as descriptive term for the community as a whole and started using LGBT or LGBT+. I think it's a sign that I'm more aware of community interests as a whole now.
- 2016, I have struggled to place my views on Trans rights. I thought I was fairly tolerate of trans people but this year I've clearly had different viewpoints then their community. Honestly, I didn't expect it to become an issue and it caught me off guard and I responded badly towards their issues as a response. So, clearly, while I am pro-LGBT, I still have ways to go.

The first moment I thought about it. That was probably some time in the early 1990's.

I probably started getting a full grasp of the issue and why I support it around 2009-2010. I was "for" it before that because my classmates were for it, because their parents were for it. My parents are not anti-SSM, but they're on the "states rights" side.

Not until after I left college (2004-2008), though I did become more open to non-discriminatory policies towards gays and lesbians while I was there.

I never opposed it, but I'm not sure I took it seriously in the first few years after hearing about it in the 1993 Hawaii court ruling. I certainly supported it since it became a serious issue in 2003.

I'm pro-gay rights but I oppose Obergefell on the states' rights grounds and believe the states should decide marriage.

I don't ever remember specifically opposing SSM. The first I can even remember hearing about it was finding out that two of my mom's friends (who I knew were a couple) couldn't legally get married, even though I knew they were planning on having a kid with a surrogate, and I thought that was incredibly stupid of the state that people who could legally be parents couldn't be married. I was probably 9 or 10 or so at the time, so circa 2003. There was a period when I figured the difference between civil unions and marriage was mostly symbolic, and figured it mostly came down to the separation of church and state, before about 6th grade (c. 2005-6) when someone made the point that there are churches who want to perform gay marriages, but couldn't under state law.

Always, since I learned it was a political issue, probably sometime in the Bush years between 2000-2008. Though I do remember asking my parents why guys can't marry guys, or girls marry girls, when I was a small kid around 1st grade and not being satisfied with the answer.

2008, after the ruling and when Prop 8 happened. Turned out family wasn't at an end at all, and that those overlooked ones needed support. In the end, pro-family and anti-gay weren't as related as I thought initially.

This, almost exactly.
