One of the problems with running as a NY Republican is that the NY media is dominated by Democratic pols. This wasn't true in the 1960s and 1970s because liberal Repubicans from NYC were incumbents. Rockefeller. Javits. Lefkowitz. Lindsay (until 1971). It was also a time where NY's Democratic Party was in the midst of its own civil war between its organization factions and the NDC (New Democratic Coalition, a liberal reformist faction). The inside joke was that "NDC" meant "November Doesn't Count", and it's true that many NDC-backed Democrats were the most liberal and unelectable back in the day.
The most likely Republican to be elected Governor is Rudy Giuliani, because he's a media star that lots of registered Democrats have already voted for. Giuliani's a media presence in NY media, even now. None of the other guys mentioned here really are.
