I won't lie; I would have been one of the Chicago liberals that backed Ryan in 98.

Ryan ran on an expansion of Cook County's pro-gay housing ordinance (which banned landlords from housing discrimination based on sexual orientation). Poshard took the other side.

Ryan favored justice reform in the state (and implemented it), while Poshard opposed him.

Poshard was from coal country far downstate and therefore staunchly opposed to Clean Air Act provisions and proposed expanded mining in SoIL.

On economics, Poshard wasn't even a consistent liberal. He was a Clinton New Democrat - favored welfare reform.

Whether Poshard was more conservative than Ryan on the whole is questionable (though arguable, I would say). However, it is undeniable that Poshard was to the right of the party at large and that Ryan was to the left of his party at large.

The party in Chicago never backed Poshard and he struggled significantly at raising funds from Democratic donors on the city's north side and near North Shore that Dems count on.

Poshard picked up plenty of counties in and around his home congressional district in Little Egypt, but was pummeled in the collar counties and Cook County (despite winning it (margins matter)).

I would have been one of the Chicago liberals that crossed over to Ryan.

Ryan without hindsight, though I could've lived with Poshard.  Given Ryan's scandals that broke later, I might have picked Poshard in hindsight.

Poshard, very easily. Even though he lost, its one of my favorite Gubernatorial maps:

Its funny that Poshard got 47.47% and in the Senate race that year, Moseley-Braun got an almost identical 47.44%, but with this map:

Words fail to explain my disgust at any democrat or leftist voting for Ryan.

Ryan appeals more to the wealthy, suburban liberal simply because of his more moderate positions on a few notable issues, which stem primarily from his rather yuppie background. He was, at heart, a mainstreet Republican who represented the business/establishment interests. Poshard may have been more socially conservative than most on the left would be comfortable with today, but he definitely represented the interests of the little man and workers (hence his opposition to the Clean Air Act as it endangered the jobs of coal workers among his Southern Illinois constituents).

Words fail to explain my disgust at any Democrat of leftist, especially from outside of Illinois, considering Glenn Poshard to be significantly better than George Ryan just because he has a D next to his name

This basically sums up my thoughts and plus, and George Ryan was a corrupt politicians that looked out for business interests and engages in bribery, corruption and extortion. Meanwhile Pochard bring those charges to light and advocated clean government, and refused to take money from big donors and special interests groups, with his views on campaign financing.

So yes, I am in disgust to how any leftist could vote Ryan over Poshard, but muh fycking abortion, and much Ryan opposed TEH DEATH PENALTY!!!

Yes, which is why I think it's funny that people are supporting him in this thread, with hindsight.

I voted Poshard with hindsight, but w/o hindsight, my partisan nature have may have made me vote Ryan.

Write-in Jim Edgar. But between the two, Poshard, because he's not as much of a crook as Ryan is.

The person who attacked welfare and social services, and government created jobs, and started a culture of "private" business should help people. No thanks, but Jim Edgar was good because was TEH moderate on social issues.

Likely Poshard. Even though he was a so-con, and social issues are very important to me, he was great on campaign finance reform, and also NOT A F**KING CRIMINAL.
