(This a collaborative TL so you can join along with the events in this TL HOWEVER do not start getting to unrealistic or you will be kicked from this TL. BTW you can write stuff in popular culture that was going around this time)

POD:Instead of waiting John Hinckley who had been waiting till spring to gun down Carter stalks the President during in relection campaign in Tennessee)

October 9th 1980:Whille speaking in the Opryland Hotel hotel Jimmy Carter is shot two times one in the arm and fatally in the chest by a man obsessed with the actresses Jodie Foster.   

Afterwards Walter Mondale is sworn in as the 40th President of the United States in his hotel room.

"We lost a good man and a activist for peace for a heartless assassin looking for attention.

October 8Th 1980:John Hinckley  Jr is tackled outside his home and taken to police after a 12 min standoff which kills 1 officer

October 15Th 1980:President Mondale says Florida Governor Rebuin Askew of Florida to be his running mate

October 13Th 1980:The funeral for President Carter is held outside the Capital building

November 4Th 1980:After a close race in Missouri which Mondale barely wins Mondale is reelected as president.

January 27th, 1981: Mondale speaks with the Soviet PM over the phone to discuss a nuclear arms treaty.

November 4, 1980: Democrats suffered big losses in both houses despite Walter Mondale's narrow victory (just 1% in the popular vote) over Ronald Reagan. The Democrats however retained control of both the  House and Senate.
