None of these candidates were bad, so it would've been a contest between three relatively likeable candidates. Personally, I would've voted for the Democrat, Elizabeth Holtzman.

Javits in the primary, D'Amato in the general.

BTW: Javits wasn't a spoiler.  Most of his supporters were not Democrats, but liberal Republicans who found D'Amato too conservative.  Same deal with John Anderson.
