IMO NYC (Rudy Giuliani was elected, lots of corporate interests, tough on crime, etc.) > Los Angeles (hollywood, more support for immigration reform, etc) > Chicago (Democrat machine).

NYC, imo, is the most conservative and LA the least.

NYC has conservative Italian-American voters, very law-and-order like stances on crime and strong support for NYPD and their families. Irish-Americans I believe are swingy in NYC, but I could be wrong.

The Catholic Church is strong in NYC and likely means there are more Pro-Life people in NYC then in LA or possibly Chicago as well (not that it matters, as the pro-life vote is a tiny minority in all three cities).

NYC is the heart of American Judaism, including Orthodox Judaism (Borough Park, Crown Heights, Williamsburg etc...) and is easily the most Pro-Israel/Hawkish on Israel city in America.

NYC and Chicago have large working class populations, so very strong union cities but possibly more conservative culturally and maybe on some social issues too.

NY, because its density and demographics help it retain ideological diversity.

New York, definitely. I think Chicago is the least Conservative of the three as it has a long history of working class and minority oriented politics and an inclination towards radicalism. The Chicano and Black Power movements have been very strong there, as have labor unions and the historic Democratic Machine that has long dominated Chicago politics. It's definitely the best city for left-wing activism of those listed.

New York for sure (for reasons the OP and Sunrise stated). I would have used "least liberal" instead of "most conservative" though.

City?  No idea.  I'll take people's word on NYC, I guess?  Metro area, I would have to guess LA or Chicago, though, especially historically.

Really, the politics of LA and Chicago seem to match each other a lot more than NYC does either.

Interesting that Los Angeles had the reputation as a conservative, "middle-American" WASP city (lots of Midwestern transplants) during the 1950s and 1960s.  Times change.

It was a WASP city but immigration and cross state migration and natural growth allowed the Latino population to soar.

Chicago had the reputation as the conservative, middle-American city in the 1930s and 1940s. The Chicago school of economics, the Chicago Tribune.

No way, not with central New Jersey and Long Island. Not at all.

I guess I'm pretty ignorant about their politics, but is there really an area around New York that has voted as Republican - especially downballot - as the outer suburbs of Chicago or places like Orange County?

I made a thread similar to what you're asking here. Of those three cities' metros, New York voted the most Democratic in 2012 and Chicago voted the least.

Uh, there's plenty of such areas on Long Island. Also far northern New Jersey.

New York is obviously the most conservative, LA the least.  The further west you go, the less conservative people are.

I love the liberal bastion of Wyoming compared to the archconservative hellhole of Connecticut.

Yeah, this is just a really stupid statement made by someone who wants us all to know how liberal Oregon is, LOL.

The NYC metro was more R than the Chicago metro I believe.  Italian Americans swung towards Trump in good numbers, while Chicago's suburbs are more traditional WASP Republican.
