Let's face it. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren may be insurgent progressive presidential candidates, but they are politicians. If the Democratic Party wants to go the unorthodox, unconventional, bold and radical path that the Republican Party did in 2016 with Donald Trump, why don't they go with candidates like Kanye West, Jesse Williams, Maya Wiley, Tim Wise, or Mark Ruffalo? Should the Democratic Party go with an activist instead of a politician in 2020?

Kanye West is their only hope and best option.

1: No. People are going to be tired of inept leadership after 4 years of Trump.
2: If you're going to throw out foolish ideas, at least do some research. Kanye West isn't a Democrat.

There may be an anti-establishment wave in America, and maybe Democrats could win a general election with a non-politician candidate. But that doesn't pave the way for every activist with a Twitter profile, 100k followers and a hot take to run for president.

Donald Trump may not have been a politician, but he wasn't anything close to an activist. He had a pretty detailed background, a lot of success in the media and a pretty powerful (albeit not entirely successful) real estate empire. There's a big difference between someone like him and Jesse Williams or Mark Ruffalo.

Why does this thread ask about nominating an "activist" and go on to list people who are mostly known as celebrity entertainers?

Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Anyway, I'm looking for substance, not style; policy, not personality.
Nominate someone who will appoint only the most highly objective interpreters of law to the Supreme Court, and then I won't care what the nominee has been doing for a living.

It doesn't matter that they are celebrities. They're activists. Donald Trump was a activist against illegal immigration on the Right and he won.

No!

The Democratic Party needs to nominate someone in 2020 who folks can look at and say that he/she is the most qualified candidate to be President based on experience and temperament.

2020 isn't going to be about the revolt against the Political Class.  It's going to be a referendum on Trump, period.

This.

Activists, by the way, can (and often do) have more actual influence on public policy.  The Christian Coalition may be a joke today, but publicly funded abortion isn't coming anytime soon.

A non-politician would be fine, but it needs to be some who is extremely successful in another field, like Nick Saban, Bill Gates, or Neil Degrasse Tyson, not some random activist with no real accomplishments

Activists may be right for Congressional seats and state legislatures (what does the Party have to lose in most districts in which the activist is challenging an entrenched Republican?)

What is essential is that the activist become a politician -- constituent service, competent legislation, making relevant speeches... I think that we are going to see what weaknesses a non-politician has with Donald Trump as President. By 2018 Republicans are going to wish that they had nominated Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, or John Kasich, who really are politicians.
