Bob Dole, no one else on this list is better then Dole, electability-wise. Which doesn't say much.

Why didn't you ask who DID we pick if in 1996 we were old enough to choose?
I supported Dole at the time.
These days, I don't think I could pick from that list who to nominate.

For all the talk of Buchanan being the original Trump (he was in many ways), Dole actually made immigration much more of an issue in 96 than Buchanan, who focused mainly on trade. Dole went after California heavily and tried to replicate Pete Wilson's 94 victory on the immigration issue.

1. Pete Wilson
2. Dick Lugar
3. Bob Dole
4. Arlen Specter (without hindsight)

What about Lugar, Specter, and Wilson?

Dole.  I was for Dole back in 1996 although I considered backing Keyes.

Romney talked about immigration a lot in 2012, but that doesn't make Romney a proto-Trump. I see Dole 1996 as being similar to Romney in 2012 (an uncharismatic establishment candidate who pandered to the conservative base in the primaries and doomed themselves in the general in the process).
