I'll echo Cathcon's thoughts with a few personal examples:
Friend 1 (24-year old, female, law student at Iowa) - Registered Democrat - Fiercely partisan, absolutely hates Republicans (we're barely friends at this point, as I kind of called her out on New Year's Eve ... oops, LOL) - When pressed on views, she really doesn't hold any besides thinking the GOP is "deplorable."
Friend 2 (25-year old female, works in marketing) - Registered Republican - Doesn't really care/know much about or discuss politics - Dad is a small business owner, so she "votes for what helps out my dad"
Friend 3 (24-year old male, dating Friend 2) - Registered Democrat (says only so he can caucus) - Has opinions, pretty smart but not very ideological - Votes Democrat because 1) he smokes a lot of weed, 2) gets annoyed by excessive religiosity and 3) his rabidly liberal sister literally ruins family dinners over politics ... the 3rd reason has actually shifted him to the right on a lot of stuff, as he finds it VERY annoying and unnecessary the way she acts
These three people, all pretty smart and people I respect greatly, would be so lost on (and more importantly bored to death by) this site.
